On Wednesday, June 7, at the Port of Ulsan, the Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Participation Performance Award for Excellent Shipping Companies and Agencies 2022 took place. EUKOR was selected among the proud recipients of the program. This prestigious award is a testament to our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and improving port air quality in South Korea.

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries started the “Vessel Speed Reduction Program” since December 2019 in an effort to protect marine species and reduce fine dust deriving from ships. The program awards shipping companies who enter certain ports at a lower speed, by reducing the price of their port fees by 30%.

According to IMO studies, when ships sail 20% slower, their fuel consumption is reduced by about half. We, as a responsible member of the marine society, will continue to participate in the program, and perhaps even think of a 100% participation to help improve port air quality

The award, hosted by the Ulsan Port Authority, recognizes our active participation in the Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) program, an innovative initiative by South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The VSR program encourages reduced ship speeds in designated Sea Areas to decrease particulate emissions from ocean-going vessels.

We have been an integral part of this initiative since it started in December 2019. More than 90% of our fleet (162 out of 182 vessels) has participated in the VSR program at the ports in Korea, contributing to a significant 5.3% reduction in GHG emissions and 5.7% decrease in fine dust in Ulsan port last year.

Son added, "A heartfelt thanks to our voyage operators. Without their commitment and determination, this would not have been possible. Looking ahead, we're determined to keep pushing boundaries, exploring the possibility of reaching a 100% participation level in the VSR program. Here's to our team, to progress, to making a difference, and to making the world better for future generations."
